What's in a Knot?

Did you know that knots and mats in your dogs' hair can get tighter every time they get wet? It's true, so if you don't get every knot out they will get worse over time. They can tighten until they pull on the skin and become uncomfortable and unhealthy for your dog.

A lot of times customers don't even realize their dog has knots. When you brush your dog you may be only skimming over the knots that are deeper in the coat. The best way to find the knots is with a metal comb BUT that can be uncomfortable and even hurtful. You need to go slow and find each one, but what do you do once you find it? It's probably best to have a groomer do it for you.

A scissor is not the right tool to remove a knot. You don't know where the hair ends and skin begins. It gives me shivers!

Customers always ask if I can get the knots and leave the coat long. The answer is 'maybe'. A clipper blade has to get under the knot to remove it. That is why the tighter the knot the less likely a groomer can leave a longer coat.

Also, to pull and yank knots out is cruel to an animal. Imagine if someone was pulling your hair one strand at a time...not fun right? At that point the most humane thing to do is to shave the coat short and start over. Keeping regular appointments isn't just a business mindset for a groomer but the right thing to do by your dog so he can enjoy the appointments.

Give yourself choices on how your dog looks by making sure that they stay knot free.
