A Dogs' Fun in the Sun

With summer upon us your dog will enjoy the weather as much as you do, but there are some things to be aware of.

Remember, dogs don't sweat like we do. I recently had a conversation with a customer who thought that dogs have sweat glands the same as humans. The customer wanted the dog to have a haircut so she didn't get sweaty in the heat. This is a misconception.

I'm sure you've noticed that when a dog is hot he or she pants. That's how a dogs' body cools itself, through panting. They do not have sweat glands in their armpits although they do have sweat glands on their nose and feet. Also, they can not get rid of body heat as efficiently as humans.

It's important to have plenty of water on hand when playing on the beach or in your backyard on a hot day. Also, shaving double coated dogs can actually make them feel more heat as that coat insulates from heat as well as cold. Making sure their coat is in good condition for good airflow is key and keep them in the shade if possible.

I take my dog to the beach and although he doesn't like the water, he does like to stay with us. To help him stay cool and safe we put up a tent and bring plenty of water. If he seems uncomfortable or his tonque gets a 'cupping' at the end, we take him into the house.

Enjoy the summer with your dog but keep these tips in mind to keep your dog cool. Have fun in the sun!
